EBooks FreeBooks

They keep TRYING to sell us on the idea of reading books from the screen but they have a way to go yet before there is a serious challenge to libraries. However, where else would you stumble across the US Federal Trade Commission's 2003 report into spam email and learn that
Ninety-six percent of spam concerning investment and business opportunities contained false “From”lines, “Subject” lines, or message text. Does that come as a surprise? And would you PAY for that information?
On the other hand, downloading onto your ipod or other device would be/could be immensely beneficial for the hard of reading.
Reading a book from your mobile phone screen though? Puleease! What donkey thought THAT would be a goer?

A REAL after life

Second Life hey? Unfortunately the Dept's computers won't let me down load the required software so I don't get to have a new and interesting personality. Damn. I will have to find a way around THAT so I could practice being a woman before having the operation. Early days I guess for educational institutions but it would make remote learning much more attractive, may well in our case be of interest for the delivery of Adult Education classes and would be attractive I suspect to people with mobility problems.

Peas in a podcast

The link to the yahoo explanation of podcasts didn't work for me. Was this a cunning ploy to make sure I do it I ask myself. If so, it didn't work. Ha ha ha. Found some interesting sites to which I would have expected the SLT filter to have stopped access. Good to see they snuck through as in my professional opinion, filtering sucks. I expect that there will be mountains of useful and challenging, thought provoking stuff available through podcasts but unfortunately I think I am hitting the technological overload stage. The web should be limited to one new technological innovation each six months. I managed to link to the RSS feed from my Google Reader even though I am drowning in a sea of stuff....BUT - the end is in sight!!

ROLLMEOVER IN THE CLOVER....
Rollyo hey? Seems to me to be an extremely limited version of google or some other search engine. An interesting (a word to be used when trying not to praise) and clever little tool but I can't see that it would ever be of use to me. I do have a pretty limited outlook on life though.
TAKING THE WIKI
Like the vast majority I have heard of and am familiar with Wikipedia but hadn't realised the range of other wikis out there. Both the Booklover's wiki and the Best Practices for Library Services wiki were the two that most interested and impressed me. Best Practices seems very broad ranging and I can see a use for Booklover's for public libraries wishing to connect more with their users.

LIBRARY2.0

It was useful to finally find a definition of what is meant by library2.0 AND to realise that we are actually showing some elements of being a library2.0 library. It was also a practical use of de.lici.ous to track down some library2.0 articles. I think writely can be a useful tool for staff geographically distant.

Del.icio.us

While I found Facebook interesting and fun, Del.icio.us both interesting and extraordinarily attractive to a librarian's ordered mind. Free word subject indexing is great. Who needs cataloguers? It could be a very useful tool for city librarians to share. Top marks.
